76 BAL HARBOUR WITH HER BOLD SARTORIAL style and steady confidence, British expat Roya Sachs is hard to ignore. So is her work—by design. The 27-year- old New York-based curator of the Lever House Art Collection and art director of Spring Place has built her career around sourcing art that compels interaction and leaves the viewer transformed. That Sachs is in her element around prolific thinkers is something of a genetic trait. She's the daughter of writer Maryam Sachs and artist– designer Rolf Sachs; her grandfather is the photographer Gunter Sachs. A jetset life (born in Munich, raised in London, educated in New York City) matched by work with some of the world's most celebrated art institutions including MACBA, MoMA, Sotheby's and Performa has helped her eye travel even further. Here, Sachs shares where her eye is landing this Fall. EYES WIDE OPEN Curator and creative director Roya Sachs has made a profession out of discovering extraordinary objects. Her Fall to-do lists are equally arresting. BY KAREN QUARLES 1. What performance artists have your attention right now? Hong Kong sound-focused performance artist Samson Young, whose work I most recently saw during Hong Kong Art Basel, and American artist Signe Pierce, who had a show this summer at Times Square Space in New York. Both interesting and intriguing! 2. What are your favorite places to see art? The Schaulager in Basel, the Stedelijk in Amsterdam and the Park Avenue Armory in New York. 3. What's the most essential item on your desk? My Smythson notebook—it holds and translates all the madness in my mind. 4. What's your favorite place for a Fall drink in New York? Little Branch, an underground speakeasy live-jazz bar in West Village. 5. What music have you been listening to on repeat? "Udi Baba," by Asha Bhosle. She was known for being the playback singer in Hindi cinema and has one of the widest song repertoires in music history. This song is a great Bombay disco gem from the early '80s. 6. What books are on your bedside table? "Americanah" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Vasari's "Lives of the Artists." 7. How do you treat yourself? Italian opera at the Met. 8. What beauty product is your instant pick me up? Lancôme liquid liner. 9. Where do you shop in London? Vivienne Westwood for unique statement pieces and Topshop for my essentials. 10. What's the most extravagant item in your wardrobe? A silver sequined vintage Chanel blazer I stole from my mother. 1 3 2 6 10 PHOTO BY CAROLINE CUSE
