The Pompidou. A book you loved so much you've read it more than once: You know, I've never read a book twice, is that nuts or what?! Right now I'm reading a book called "Daily Rituals: How Artists Work," and am finding it very cathartic. I obsess about routines and schedules (in my personal experience as a creative it's the only way I've been able to sustain a real practice), and this book is about the daily routines of famous artists, authors, and musicians. A job you feel you may have done in a past life: I've always had a fantasy of having a party hat shop. Not like any party hat store, more a place you'd find sculptural headpieces. I get real joy from making hats for pals; I usually carry a small stapler in my purse, just in case something arises! Designer, artist, or architect who's most on your mind these days? I've recently become enamored with Felix Kayser's work. He was an anthroposophic architect from Berlin in the '20s, but his work is remarkably fresh today. Current project you're most excited about? We're getting into final fabrication for a really special project in downtown LA right now, in the old MacArthur building. In the '80s the building was quite literally vibrating with artists and musicians (Keith Haring, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, et al.), so we wanted to bring in some of that spirit through the furniture and lighting. How many chairs does one need around a dining table? However many you want to serve dinner to. And if most of the time it's four, and every few months it's 12, then make it six to eight, and hide the chairs around the house, or get some that stack and can be stashed in a corner somewhere. Okay, what's the chicest stacking chair you've come across? All time favorite stacking chair is the '50s Roland Rainer Birch "Stadthallensessel." The Bruno Rey chair is also great—DWR is selling the reproduction. Tuileries Garden, Paris Hotel Covell, LA, designed by Breer Centre Pompidou, Paris BAL HARBOUR 117
