-- Day MORNING Reach Nantucket by boat or plane To catch the ferry, drive to one of several ports in Cape Cod. If you're flying, several carriers, including American, JetBlue, United, and Delta, have nonstop seasonal service to Nantucket Memorial Airport from major cities on the East Coast. Check into The Cottages Recently renovated and part of White Elephant Resorts, a luxury hotel brand with four properties (and a 240-slip marina) on the island, The Cottages is a collection of 29 townhouse–like accommodations set around the wharf. Ranging from studios to three bedrooms, they're nautically inspired and outfitted with full kitchens and living rooms; most have private decks. If you're seeking the amenities and services of a resort, the harborside-set 54-room White Elephant hotel is a better bet. It also features Garden Cottages with shaded sitting areas that are steps away from the main lobby, the popular Brant Point Grill, and The White Elephant Spa by Darya. Go for a hike Traverse 30 miles of flat-paved paths through nature preserves; it's the best way to get a sense of the island's patina. Take a walking tour of Main Street to see 19th-century landmarks like The Pacific National Bank, the horse trough, and 87 Main Street, a home emblematic of a typical 1800s Nantucket residence, with a central chimney and four bays. AFTERNOON Grab lunch Something Natural, a more than half century–old Nantucket institution, is famous for its tasty sandwiches on breads baked in-house and chocolate chip cookies that are often still warm from the oven. As far as exclusive escapes go, this bucolic New England island ranks high on the list.
