A C M in this issue Carly Kuhn (formerly known as The Cartorialist) is a Miami-based illustrator and designer who has collaborated with brands including Sotheby's, Rosewood Hotels, Crate & Barrel, Prada, and the American Ballet Theatre. Born and raised in New York City, Kuhn lived in LA for 12 years, where she found her way into an unexpected career as an artist. Her work ranges from portraits and fashion illustrations to large-scale murals and logos, and in this issue, she captured the likeness of supermodel Karolina Kurkova and event designer Colin Cowie for the first installment of "Table for Two." She is inspired by people and their quirks, pop culture, and the weird things she observes by being a New Yorker at heart who walks in any city. She is currently working on her first book, which will be called "Character Study." "On my wish list this holiday season is a good spa day/weekend! I have a 3-year-old boy and a 7-month-old boy, so a little pampering sounds rather lovely." Mary Holland is a South African writer based in New York. For her first contribution to Bal Harbour, Holland took to the jungle—from Cambodia to Rwanda—to find the perfect private perches for immersion in nature. She has written for the Financial Times, HTSI, WSJ Magazine, Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, W Magazine, Robb Report, Condé Nast Traveler, and more. She is also the New York correspondent for Monocle magazine. "I'm looking forward to a week by the beach in South Africa, swimming in the sea and having long, lazy dinners al fresco." WE ASKED: WHAT'S ON YOUR HOLIDAY WISH LIST THIS YE AR? Alex John Beck is a Dutch-American photographer. Raised in England, he is now based in Amsterdam after a decade in New York, so he's replaced running over the Brooklyn Bridge with rowing up and down the Amstel. Beck photographed this issue's cover story, "Siren's Call," his first contribution to Bal Harbour. He's finishing a short film on dancers in Rotterdam, writing about photography, and printing a series on date harvesters in Mauritania. "My wife and I had our first child this year, a daughter, and so my wish is for time to just slow down! She's at such a precious age right now, and every day brings something new. I wish we could pad our days somehow and live each moment over." BALHAR B O U RSH O P S .CO M
