IT'S 1971, AND
THE ICONIC NEIMAN
MARCUS OPENS AT
BAL HARBOUR SHOPS.
It's the department store's
first location outside of Texas; this
represents a major coup for
founder Stanley Whitman. "I
turned them down three or four
times," said Stanley Marcus,
Neiman's president, "but Whitman
kept coming back and saying
he had the best location in Florida.
I told him I wasn't even sure I
wanted to come to Florida!"
Architecturally, the store had an
octagonal theme throughout its
design and a soaring, 60-foot-high
atrium partially illuminated
by a skylight dome. Its slightly
space-age ambience lacked
visual obstructions and allowed a
shopper to look out over
the store and anticipate their
next purchase.
