THE OTHER SIDE OF ITALY
Considering a Tuscan trip this year? Make the most of it with a trip that combines
both urban adventure and time on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
BEACH
The Tuscan Coast is an overlooked gem, studded with off-the-beaten-path
islands where the crowds are minimal and the visitors are mostly local (take
that, Capri): roam a ruined Roman Villa on Giglio Island, or idle off the coast of
Giannutri, an island that's home to barely 20 people. Explore them all in style
on Satori, the 10-person yacht owned and designed by Claus and Jeanette
Thottrup, the Danish entrepreneurs behind lavish country estate Borgo Santo
Pietro just outside Siena. The almost-140-foot schooner is available for guests
to charter, and is rostered with the same top-tier staffers as the property.
CIT Y
Luxe operator Auberge just debuted in Tuscany via the Collegio alla
Querce, an 83-room hotel housed in a former school, which sits in a glorious
spot on a hill barely two miles outside Florence's city hubbub.
The best room is undeniably the Residenza la Quercia, which has a butler's
kitchen, rooftop terrace, and private plunge pool. And for once you
can relish being sent to the principal's office: it's now been converted into
a drinking den, Bar Bertelli, where you can even smoke a cigar without
getting detention.
