CONSIDERED
"FIFTH AVENUE
BY THE SEA,"
Bal Harbour Shops attracted Martha
Phillips, who opened a dazzling
boutique in 1965 that shimmered
under crystal chandeliers reflecting
off antique mirrors. She stocked
it with Europe's most coveted names,
like Valentino (shown here at the
store's entrance). Couture pieces
flew out the door at $30,000 each.
Among them: a Valentino
flamingo-pink pantsuit paired with
a vest embroidered in tiny shards of
coral. At Martha's, Bal Harbour
Shops wasn't just retail, it was high
fashion's stage.
