G U T T E R C R E D I T T E E K AY BALHAR B O U RSH O P S .CO M DSQUARED2'S BIG 3-0 For three decades, Dean and Dan Caten's label has remained true to a singular vision: To defy convention. BY NICK REMSEN In a fashion world of faster and more furious pace than ever, few have stayed the course like Dsquared2's Dean and Dan Caten. For 30 years they've proffered a unique blend of Canadian woodsiness, leathery rock-and-roll, and unrelenting sexiness. In other hands, this mix might sound odd, but in the twins' unwavering aesthetic, it has amounted to three decades of pure fun. Here, a check in with the Catens on what's to come next. What does sexy mean in fashion today versus when you first launched 30 years ago? Dean Caten: For us, sexy has always meant the same thing: It's not really about the clothes, it's about the attitude. Sexy is the confidence you project, it's about the way a look makes you feel, and the power that comes with that. Clothes are simply the tool. If it makes you walk into a room and own it, then that's sexy. And that's timeless. In an era when quick hits, viral moments, and micro-trends move faster than ever, how do you ensure Dsquared2 stays relevant, while also staying true to your DNA? Dean Caten: Longevity comes from consistency. Dsquared2's playful energy and the irreverence of our collections are—and will always be—present. We like to use trends as conversation starters, not as the core of who we are. We pass them through the Dsquared2 lens. BIG 3-0 Yafa Signed Jewels, the renowned purveyor of museum-quality vintage jewelry, will bring extraordinary heritage pieces to the Shops' Access Suite during Miami Art Week. The showcase will run from December 4 to 7 as a prelude to the opening of its new boutique at the Shops next April. With 40 years of curating rare treasures for collectors, Yafa is celebrated for its unique access to exceptional jewels from storied maisons including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, and Harry Winston. Highlights include a 1970s Cartier suite of coral and diamond ear clips, ring, and bracelet, a Van Cleef & Arpels Mystery-Set ruby bracelet, and a Harry Winston emerald and diamond necklace by Jacques Timey—centered on a 23-carat Colombian emerald. Each piece embodies the glamour and spirit of collecting. How do you see AI, digital design, or virtual shows impacting the way Dsquared2 tells stories? Dan Caten: We always try to stay close to the younger generation— from people on our teams to collaborators we meet in our creative space. They are the ones shaping the culture and pushing the conversation forward. Naturally, that does mean exploring AI and other technologies. At the same time, there are elements of fashion that we consider irreplaceable—nothing compares to the emotion and impact of a live runway show. It's not just a way to present new collections; it's a spectacle, an entertaining moment of joy and celebration of our brand. What does luxury mean to you in 2025, when the definition seems more fragmented than ever? Dan Caten: It isn't about exclusivity— it's about freedom of expression. Real luxury today is the ability to be yourself, to choose how you want to present your identity, and to feel confident in that choice. It's personal, and it doesn't have to fit into one definition. You've always pushed boundaries of gender and sexuality in your work. How do you want that legacy to read when people look back at these 30 years? Dean Caten: We want to be remembered as people who refused to be confined by convention. Our goal has always been to celebrate the individual and the creative expression of who we truly are—not just as designers, but as people. room and own it, then that's sexy. that's timeless. expression of who we truly are—not just as designers, but as people.
