Welcome Note s always, this issue of Bal Harbour Magazine took us on great fashion adventures. It started in June when we sent acclaimed photographer Jessica Craig-Martin to the Venice Biennale, arguably the world's largest confluence of art, fashion and pure purchasing power. Craig-Martin, whose work is included in the Whit- ney Museum of American Art, is known for deconstructing the art form of social photographs, abstracting— and distilling—the essence of gala affairs. From Italy, we ventured back home to Bal Harbour. This December, Stella McCartney opens her fifth free- A Sarah Harrelson and Carlos Suarez standing store in the United States at Bal Harbour, featuring her Spring 2012 ready to wear collection. Two other amazing stores have recently opened at the shops, Gee Beauty, a skincare and spa brand which has the attention of the entire industry with its hard to find holistic products, and Balenciaga, whose enduring elegance is inter- nationally coveted. For the occasion, our talented columnist Lynn Yaeger—who also writes for Vogue and The New York Times—gets an exclusive interview with Nicolas Ghesquière, the brilliant designer who is carrying on the legacy of the masterful Balenciaga. The renowned Kate Betts, author of "Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style" came to Books & Books for a signing, and for her first contribution to the magazine, wrote a smart trend piece on the continuing style influence of the 1920's, popping up everywhere on the Spring 2012 runways. Then, we feature the work of the great Helmut Newton, who brought a cinematic approach to his ground-breaking fashion photography: aside from the stunning Polaroid images in this portfolio from the Helmut Newton Foundation, we've interviewed the show's curator, Matthias Harder. The images are also part of a new Taschen catalogue, available now. In this issue, we have included two very stylish men (alongside two equally stylish women, Lauren Bush and Elizabeth Saltzman) in our Style Setters section: acclaimed chef Marcus Samuelson, of the new Red Rooster in Harlem, and Jay Fielden, editor of Town & Country. Meanwhile, William Kissel covers the boom in the luxury menswear market, and, naturally, the new third floor store at Neiman Marcus Bal Harbour, de- voted entirely to menswear. We top off the fashion feast with two incredibly iconoclastic women, Daphne Guinness and Elettra Wiede- mann, our cover girl. Guinness, one of the world's best-dressed women, has loaned her couture collection to the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology for an exhibition currently on view. Tali Jaffe sat down with Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of the museum, to discuss Guinness' collection. Wiedemann is both beautiful and a new order of It Girl: the daughter of Isabella Rossellini and grand- daughter of the late Ingrid Bergman, she chooses to live simply, totally of the moment and captures the spirit of this month's fashion adventures.
